After being kicked out of the wealthy family - Chapter 6: Meeting Grandpa, the New Doctor

After staying up all night, Lin Wu finally managed to finish making the new spices early the next morning.

She went downstairs, brewed a strong cup of coffee to shake off her fatigue, tidied herself up, and then headed to the garage in the back. Choosing a car, she drove straight to the hospital.

Upon arriving, Lin Wu first sought out Mr. Lin’s attending doctor. Zheng Qi had made prior arrangements, so the doctor was already waiting for her in his office.

As soon as he saw her, he stood up immediately, greeting her with a respectful smile. “Miss Lin, you’re here. Please, have a seat. I’ll have someone bring you a cup of tea.”

The last time they had met was over a video call, about two weeks ago. Given her young age, he wouldn't normally treat her with such deference, but this wasn’t an ordinary patient’s family member—she was one of the hospital's main benefactors. Over the past year, most of the advanced medical equipment installed in the hospital was made possible because of her investment.

The dean had instructed everyone: whenever this patron visits, make sure she feels at home!

“No need for tea,” Lin Wu said as she sat down, getting straight to the point. “What’s my grandfather’s current condition? Is there still no solution?”

The doctor looked uneasy. He took out Mr. Lin’s latest examination report and explained it to Lin Wu. Eventually, he said, “The indicators of his condition are continuing to deteriorate, and we’re reaching the limits of what we can control. Unless there’s a new medication developed or if we could get an expert from the Rzhou Medical Organization to take a look, maybe...”

Lin Wu frowned.

The doctor continued, “And even in the medical organization, not everyone would be able to handle a case like this. For your grandfather’s condition, you would need someone on Mr. Yang’s level.”

Mr. Yang was the head of the medical organization, holding a highly respected international position. His expertise attracted people from around the world.

It was said that his appointments were fully booked until next year; getting a slot was far from easy.

Lin Wu’s expression darkened, and she remained silent.

The doctor quickly added, “But, as it happens, we have a new doctor joining us today. He was specially invited from Beijing. He not only has outstanding abilities, but he’s also an expert on cases like your grandfather’s! Perhaps… perhaps he might have some ideas…”

After a pause, Lin Wu asked, “When will he arrive?”

The doctor glanced at his watch. “He should be here within the hour.”

Lin Wu stood up. “I’m going to see my grandfather first. When the doctor arrives, please arrange a meeting. I’d like to speak with him directly about my grandfather’s condition.”

“Of course!”

The doctor nodded eagerly and escorted her to the ward.

Lin Wu declined his offer to accompany her further and headed on alone.

Though she hadn’t visited often, Zheng Qi had familiarized her with the layout and all the details of the hospital. She quickly found her grandfather’s ward.

As she neared, she noticed the door was slightly ajar.

Just as she was about to enter, she heard Mr. Lin’s angry voice from inside.

“You’ve gone too far! Wu Wu traveled such a long way back to Beicheng, and as soon as she arrived, she rushed here to Shenggui to see you. Yet you didn’t even let her eat or take a break! You kept her waiting and drove her away as soon as she arrived?”

An indignant voice, Fang Ruling’s, replied, “Dad, how was I supposed to know she’d come so early? She didn’t even call to tell us when she’d arrive. How is that our fault? We were waiting for her in the Tianzi room!”

Then, in a frustrated tone, she added, “She’s just pretending to be innocent to turn you against us! Don’t be fooled!”

Mr. Lin grew even angrier. “She’s doing it on purpose? If she wanted to play games, she wouldn’t have come to see you at all! And are you saying Wu Wu didn’t call? It’s obvious you didn’t bother saving her number and ignored her call just because it came from an unknown number!”

Fang Ruling went quiet.

Mr. Lin coughed, his voice softening with disappointment. “After all, you’ve lived with her for twelve years—how can you be so heartless?”

Fang Ruling’s voice rose sharply. “Twelve years? She isn’t my real daughter! If it hadn’t been for her, I wouldn’t have been separated from Qianqian for so long. Qianqian had to endure so much! Dad, Qianqian is your actual granddaughter; how can you favor an outsider?”

“My favoritism? It’s you who are too blinded by...ahem…”

His agitation triggered a fit of coughing, but Fang Ruling continued as if oblivious to his condition. “You’re the one who’s disappointing Qianqian, your own granddaughter…”

Unable to listen any longer, Lin Wu pushed the door open.

The sudden noise startled both of them.

Mr. Lin coughed so hard that tears welled up, his breathing rapid as he reached out for Lin Wu.

Ignoring Fang Ruling’s scowl, Lin Wu walked over to the bed and gently patted Mr. Lin’s back. Recalling the medication information Zheng Qi had sent her, she found his medicine in the bedside drawer, poured a glass of water, and helped him take it.

Gradually, Mr. Lin regained his composure. He looked at Lin Wu, his eyes red with emotion, and then turned a fierce gaze toward Fang Ruling. “Get out! When will you realize your mistakes? When will you finally acknowledge Lin Qian’s child?”

Without even glancing at Fang Ruling, Lin Wu took out the spices she’d brought, lit them, and set them on the table.

Seeing this, Fang Ruling’s face twisted in anger. “Lin Wu, what are you doing? Don’t you know dad can’t handle strong smells? And what kind of cheap incense is this?”

Since Lin Wu had been in a rush, she’d only had time to wrap the spices in a plastic bag, the kind you’d get for a few yuan at a street stall.

After lighting the spices, she shot Fang Ruling a cold look. “This has nothing to do with you.”

“You—!” Fang Ruling began, seething, but Mr. Lin cut her off.

“Enough! Are you here to see me or to make sure I die even sooner? If that’s your aim, send word to Shenghai and tell him to ask himself what kind of wife he married!”

Fang Ruling had never heard such harsh words from him, and her face flushed with shame.

Gritting her teeth, she said, “If Dad would rather favor some outsider than a family member who’s been spending her own money on your treatment, then there’s nothing left for me to say.”

With that, she turned and stormed out of the ward.

Lin Wu’s eyes gleamed with disdain.

Her grandfather was treated by Beicheng’s top medical team, with renowned specialists from across the country. His room was fitted with the best equipment and located in a VIP suite on the hospital’s top floor. 

How could the Lin family have the audacity to think that their meager contributions could cover any of this?
